Experience
Though born and bred in the Lake District, my first real taste of rock was cragging in Borrowdale, aged 16, I was hooked immediatly. I first came to The Ice Factor as an interm, whilst still studying for my diploma in Outdoor Education. It was love at first sight. So I was thrilled to be offered an apprenticeship here in 2004 and have been instructing as part of the Ice Factor team ever since. Naturally, i've developed a passion for snow and ice climbing. My first winter in Glencoe, Cairngorms and beyond, was particularly exhilarating.
I enjoy leaning the tricks of the trade from our old-timers, getting out on the hill to practice what i've learned and then passing them all on to our visitors. My climbing highlights include seconding routes way out of my range, other highlights include making the first ascent of a new rock route in Ardnamurchan. I'm rapidly building my experience of climbing overseas, with bouldering in Fontainebleau, bolt clipping in Sardinia and also in Southern Spain. I get back to the Lake District from time to time. I find walking in the hills, both there and in Scotland, a true pleasure and invaluable for building my knowledge of local conditions and discovering new climbing challenges.
