Ice climbing is physically and mentally demanding, it requires precision technique, is often terrifying but always exhilarating.
Historically, ice climbing was the preserve of the rabid mountaineer. A traditional apprenticeship would normally be followed of walking/scrambling/rock climbing/winter walking/winter mountaineering and finally ice climbing. For a great many people that is a torturous process, and certainly a bit too long if you just wanted to try it.
With that in mind we developed a range of taster sessions at the ice factor. These have proven enormously successful. So much so, it was clear that there is massive interest in ice climbing as an adventure activity, but we would always be limited by geography. So we brought the mountain to Mamma! An 8m high Ice Wall, with specialist chiller units, 3 faces -70, 80 and 90 degrees, a beginner's instruction zone and over 200 tonnes of snow brought ice climbing to the centre of London. This process has now been repeated at Olympia and the Birmingham T Mobile Street Ice Festival.
Over 4,000 people enjoyed their first taste of steep ice, right in the heart of London under the direct supervision and coaching of the Ice Factor. Daily the wall would be watched by hundreds of people (cheering and clapping! -This made our instructors focus on their technique as much as on the Ben!). We were filmed by The BBC, ITV, CBC, ABC, NBC, CH4 and the BBC Broadcast for New Year's Eve featured Ice Factor Instructors climbing in relays to take in the bells (at least we got great views of the Fireworks on the Thames).
We have since developed plans for a bigger wall and refined the session times.

The UK's Best Mobile Rock Tower For Lease Hire
The Ice Factor have been present at some of the UK's most prestigous events including the National Outdoor Show, The Ski Show, The Somerset House Winter Rink and the T-Mobile Street Ice Festival in Birmingham. We were constantly being asked if we could provide something for children to climb - so we asked Entreprises to make us a special wall.
They did. Our mobile rock wall is 8m high and offers and offers climbing on 3 principal faces. Each face has 4 climbs. The routes can be set with Autobelays - to allow the kids to climb up/down with minimum instruction, or standard top/bottom rope allowing instructors to coach the kids on technique.
We can provide the wall as a 'dry hire' where you use your own instructors/equipment or we can provide expert instruction and all equipment. We bring the wall to schools, highland games, events and corporate occassions.
Install is incredibly easy and takes approx 30 seconds:
- Stop the car and unhitch the wall
- Press the hydraulic button to erect the wall
- Start climbing!
